About Time: You Tried the Green Menu at The Good Egg SohoBy Angelica Malin
It’s about time you tried the new green menu at The Good Egg Soho – a special menu which puts vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free dining front and centre, with everything you need in one place. Here’s what you need to know:
Green Menu at The Good Egg Soho: The Lowdown
Ever since The Good Egg’s street food days, they’ve been all about making Middle Eastern-inspired food fresh daily with the highest quality, most ethically and sustainably sourced ingredients around, working closely with the Sustainable Restaurant Association (SRA) to find suppliers whose ethics and approach to food align with their own. They’ve always aimed to serve ‘more veg’ in their restaurants, as they realise that making really exciting and delicious vegetarian and vegan food is a big way they can promote sustainability, whilst also lessening their company’s impact on the environment. So, the Green menu is taking things one step further.
They’ve launched the Green Menu as a way of helping guests with special diets (vegan / vegetarian / gluten-free) have clearer, more digestible information. They’ve put all those special diets in one place, meaning diners can find what they need quickly and easily. The Green Menu, featuring at brunch and dinner, launches in Soho in September and selected offerings at their Stoke Newington branch.
Green Menu at The Good Egg Soho: The Food
Brunch highlights include Iraqi Aubergine Pita (£10), a modern take on the classic Tel Aviv Sabich, and staple on the menu here. You can order the Classic, a fluffy pita stuffed with tahini, amba, zhoug, dak dak, fudgy egg, pickles and fried aubergine, Crispy Potato, a vegan version with hot spiced potatoes, and Salat Sabich, a gluten-free option without the bread. Another brunch favourite is the vegan Beetroot Reuben (£10), which features roasted beetroot with tabasco-spiked cashew Russian dressing, dairy-free coconut cheese sauce, garlic, dill kraut and crispy onions on our soft and chewy house pretzel challah. For something sweet, the vegetarian Babka French Toast (£10.50) with honeyed pumpkin, house labneh, golden yellow turmeric custard and crunchy candied pumpkin seed, cannot be missed.
You’re in for a real treat at dinner. Dinner highlights on the Green Menu include the delicious Aubergine Shawarma (£12.50) – expect burnt aubergine, slow roasted in the clay oven and served with green whipped feta and a toasted pumpkin seed, preserved lemon and chilli relish and sweet confit flavoured with garlic and thyme. Another favourite is the vegan Clay Over Cauliflower (£12) – a classic on the Tel Aviv street food scene – enjoy spiced and roasted cauliflower with turmeric laced tahini dressing, sweet date molasses, crispy chickpeas and fresh mint.
