Top 5: Gluten-Free Pizzas in LondonBy Elana Wall
Pizza is one of my favourite five letter words (others include toast, apple and Elana). Pizza is a little word with great potential – you can put almost anything on pizza and it will probably taste delicious. However, one of my biggest #celiacproblems has been finding good gluten-free pizza. In my quest to find the best gluten-free pie, I’ve come across some great places. Here are 5 of my favourite London spots for a good gluten free ‘za:
1. Best for Price: Stingray Café, Tufnell Park gluten-free pizza
Stingray does really good GF pizza; great surface area, thin and crispy crust and lots of different toppings. But they don’t just do pizza – they also do amazing garlic and cheese bread (though it’s circular and it looks like pizza…so it’s basically pizza). It’s also very reasonable priced and so tasty – what more could you ask for?! It’s nothing fancy, but it’s definitely worth a try.
2. Best for Flavour: Rossopomodoro, London
This is a relatively new find for me and with loads of locations around London, it’s convenient AND tasty. I kept it simple with a margherita pizza and let the crust do the talking. Another win for thin and crispy, with the right amount of chewiness (gluten free dough runs the risk of tasting like cardboard) and a very good sauce to cheese ratio. Call ahead to make sure they have the gluten-free dough in the kitchen, and you won’t be disappointed.
3. Best for Trendy Points: Otto, Notting Hill
If you’re on a gluten-free diet, you know how limited your choices can be. So it’s always nice to find a place that gives you something a bit different for a change. If you ever get bored of normal pizza (you weirdo), check out Otto’s cornmeal crust variety. If you had to describe Otto in one (overused) word, it would be ‘rustic;’ your pizza is served to you in a metal pan and the crust is thick and mealy, in a really good way. The pie has great texture and I always burn my mouth trying to eat it too quickly as soon as it’s placed in front of me. I tend to favour whichever vegetarian special they have that day. Definitely worth a visit.
4. Best for Convenience: Pizza Express
Since Pizza Express brought out their gluten-free menu, I’ve been eating so much gluten-free pizza and the novelty has not worn off. For someone on a gluten-free diet, the ease and convenience of being able to walk into a mainstream restaurant is almost a luxury! Gone are the days of only being able to eat a salad without breadsticks; now a coeliac’s options at Pizza Express are numerous. My absolute favourite is the Padana pizza and I almost always order the same thing. It is a gorgeous combination of goat’s cheese, caramelized onions, spinach and red onions and I’m always left wanting more. It’s not the best crust I’ve had and it’s a bit on the small side, but it allows me to feel like a normal restaurant-goer and that’s a win for me.
5. Best for Delivery: Pappa & Ciccia
This place makes gluten-free that bit more accessible, with real Italian pizzas delivered to your door. The 12-inch pizzas are hand made on a thin traditional Italian base and are generously topped with the freshest and best quality ingredients – even better, gluten-free versions are always available. Try the amazing veggie pizzas with egg and spinach. Win.
