Top 5: Veggie Burgers in LondonBy Kathleen Fleming
Veggie burgers give vegetarian food a bad reputation. Often dry, bland, and need an ocean of mayo to make them palatable, your average falafel patty makes us weep. We’ve had enough. Forget your woes, and try one of these instead – these burgers are nothing short of magical…
1. Best Beanless Burger: Honest Burgers
Bean burgers are ten-a-penny, so finding an awesome tasting, bean-less burger makes us pretty happy. Honest Burgers got creative and have come up with a cauliflower and sweetcorn burger topped with cucumber and coriander yogurt – good enough to tempt even the most hardened carnivore. Honest Burgers also do gluten-free buns and every order comes with rosemary salted chips.

2. Best Bunless Burger: The Veggie Table
Get down to the Veggie Table at Borough Market for homemade veggie burgers and delicious salads and sauces. This vegetarian stall avoid “fake meat” and processed vegetarian foods and instead whip up burgers using flavoursome vegetables, beans, pulses, legumes, herbs and spices. For a bun free burger, you can choose the lettuce option – vegan burger wrapped up in green leaves – or enjoy your burger with a selection of their homemade salads.

3. Best Blowout Burger: Meat Liquor
Best known for a lot of meat and a lot of booze, Meat Liquor makes a surprisingly tasty halloumi burger. Their halloumi and mushroom burger is topped with onions, pickles, mustard and ketchup and tastes crazily good. Throw in a portion of their chili cheese fries and a bourbon-infused milkshake and you have one hell of a veggie burger blowout.
Where: 74 Welbeck Street, W1G 0BA
Price: £7.50
4. Best Takeaway Burger: Shake Shack
Sometimes you just need a late night feed. Look no further than Shake Shack, an American burger and fries import but of the slightly more upmarket ilk (they even have a menu for your pooch). Served with their scrummy “Shack Sauce” and plenty of melted cheese, the “Shroom Burger” is exactly what you want after a night on the town. Enjoy this cheesy mushroom melt with crinkle cut fries and wash it down with a malted peanut butter shake.
Where: The Piazza, Covent Garden
Price: £5.25
5. Best Vegan Burger: Wild Food Café
The “Wild Burger” is Wild Food Café’s vegan take on the traditional patty in a bun. Made with olives and shitake mushrooms and served with salsa verde and baba-ganoush, it tastes surprisingly meaty and surprisingly flavourful. Served between two slices of sprouted, organic bread and with a side of sweet potato wedges, this is certainly London’s healthiest burger eating experience.
