In this new column, I’ll be selflessly identifying and eating the latest tasty trends across town. From the latest in world food offerings to this summer’s must-drink aperitif (Aperol Spritz is so 2013) no foodie fad will go unnoticed. So, without further ado… Here’s this week’s picks:

#1 Sabich

We’ve got falafel down; we’re au fait with kebabs; now with the soaring popularity of Middle Eastern eateries like The Palomar, Londoners are set to embrace this street food delight full throttle. Essentially a pita stuffed with tahini, fried, grilled or roasted aubergine, egg and hummus, Sabich – or Sabick – is no longer just the fodder of large Israeli communities like Golders Green (although you will find exceptional  all over NW11) as Ottolenghi’s new opening Sesame in Covent Garden, sees it brought to the masses. Eat it there, or try the lovely Honey & Co for their breakfast version.

Sesame is 23 Garrick St, London WC2E 9BN

Honey and Co is at 25A Warren St, London W1T 5LZ

#2 Fancy Patisserie

Artisanal French patisserie is everywhere at the moment. Instagram is full of the beautiful creations from places like Maitre Choux – who boast a three Michelin starred chef at the helm of their daily pastry creations –  and the exotic flavour combinations from Melba at the Savoy who pride themselves on their signature eclairs.

Fraisier 2 (1)

I’m currently in love with the seasonal Strawberry Fraisier at La Patisserie des Reves in lovely Marylebone where lemon genoise sponge, Chantilly cream and fresh strawberries transport you straight to Parisian summertime.

Maitre Choux is at 15 Harrington Road, London SW7 3ES

The Savoy is at Strand, London, United Kingdom, WC2R 0EU

La Patisserie des Reves is at 43 Marylebone High Street, London W1U 5HE

#3 Bao

This very specific form of Taiwanese street food has gone from strength to strength over the last year or so. Humble man and van kerbside beginnings from the likes of Hackney traders Bao have given way to premises with a pricey W1 postcode, such is the success of these famous cloud-like milk buns, and six months in this is a trend that shows no sign of slowing down. Queues form outside the Soho storefront from 11.30 for Bao’s steamed buns filled with pork, lamb, fried chicken etc. and places like Yum Bun, Bo Drake and endless street vans are in on the action too. Go to Bao itself if you don’t mind the queue, otherwise Flesh & Buns’ crispy piglet belly is a great – and bookable – alternative.

Bao is at 53 Lexington St Soho, W1F 9AS

Yum Bun is at Street Feast Dalston Yard, Hartwell St, London E8 3DU

Bo Drake is at 6 Greek St, London W1 4DE
