3 Foodie Gifts we’re writing home aboutBy Claudine Levy
Mother’s Day is fast-approaching. Here are our top picks of gifts for the foodies in your life…
1. Bright bubbles
Crémant really is sparkling wine’s best kept secret. It’s made much like Champagne, but because it’s produced outside the Champagne region it doesn’t go by the same name. Fine bubbles, biscuity mouth-feel and a fresh and zesty finish makes this our go-to. You can also find a very decent and good value bottle online or in your local supermarket these days. Our top picks at the moment are the Calvet Crémant de Bordeaux Rosé (£12). Made using a blend of merlot and cabernet franc grapes, this little number offers soft and fruity notes undercut with fresh raspberries and balanced by subtle lime. It’s also extremely pretty.
We also love the Arthur Metz Crémant d’Alsace (£16), which is an organic Crémant offering citrus notes balanced with apple and pears. We love this one for a pre-meal aperitif before food is served, because of its crisp and super fine bubbles.
2. An award-winning pepper mill
Any decent restaurant worth it’s salt (or pepper) will invariably have one of these iconic mills on its tables. We love the classic Paris mill, available in a range of gorgeously modern colours and engineered with the same precision that Peugeot is known for. We adore the combined beauty and reliability of this mill, it looks iconic on the counter-top and it has a grind control ring which let’s you change the settings between 6 modes, giving you ultimate control over your seasoning. And who doesn’t want that?
3. A really decent set of knives
HexClad is renowned for its innovative hybrid cookware, and we’re glad they applied their expertise to kitchen knives. We tested the Essential 6-Piece Japanese Damascus Steel Knife Set, and while pricey, it’s worth investing in a set of knives which will go the distance with you. In this case Hexclad offers the quality we were looking for. Each knife in this set is forged from 67 layers of Japanese Damascus steel, providing a harder blade with a 60 Rockwell hardness rating and a sharper edge for effortless slicing. We found prepping with these knives a genuine joy: they are just the right weight in the hand, and offer a seamless clean experience which makes chopping feel deeply satisfying. We also liked the striking wave design in the forest green wooden handles, which was different to anything else we’ve seen on the market.
