Why Geneva, you ask?

It’s a fair question for a foodie like me – let’s be honest, this Swiss city is often associated with serious diplomacy rather than mouth-watering cuisine. But here’s the twist: it’s precisely that global melting pot, thanks in no small part to the United Nations, that has given rise to a small but diverse and vibrant food scene.  When people from every corner of the world make Geneva their home, it turns out you get a deep culinary mosaic that goes far beyond fondue and fancy chocolate boxes. We were there to discover the newly launched Geneva Food Guide – a curated collection of 60 hand-picked addresses which offer the best food the city has to offer.

Geneva: Where to Stay

For a Glamourous Stay: Beau Rivage

There are plenty of plush hotels near the waterfront (with old-world glamour and jaw-dropping views), so pick one that speaks to your inner James Bond.  If ever there was a hotel that makes you feel like an old Hollywood star from the moment you walk in, it’s Beau Rivage. This beautifully restored residence is a stone’s throw from the water’s edge – I arrived just in time for sunset, and the soft, golden light bouncing off Lake Geneva felt like the city was rolling out the red carpet just for me.

My suite was decked out in timeless, polished décor, with towering windows that framed the lake like a vintage postcard. I particularly loved the quiet corners and plush armchairs dotted around the lobby – perfect for a sneaky midday reading break (or scrolling, no judgement). Come evening, I relaxed with a crisp glass of white in the hotel bar.

Geneva: What to Do and See

For Your Street Food Fix: Geneva Street Food Festival

On Saturday morning, I headed to the Street Food Festival, which runs from 5th – 15th June. Think sizzling stands, creative fusions and enough global flavours to make your taste buds do the conga. From raclette-topped chips to gourmet burgers, it was a total delight – and an orderly, pleasant one at that – clean, spacious, and comfortable places to sit in the shade.

For a City Stroll: The Rhône River

Let’s be honest, the real star of Geneva is its river. It’s so aqua-blue and sparkling that, if I hadn’t taken photos, I’d have sworn I dreamt it. Strolling along the banks is a must – I took every opportunity to soak up the fresh air and genuinely felt healthier for it.

For a Breezy Weekend Fix: TukTuk Discovery in the Countryside

Sunday called for a bit of fresh air, so I hopped aboard an electric tuk-tuk (I know, in Switzerland!) and cruised out to the countryside. Cue rolling hills, sweeping vineyards and some charming farmhouses. We were treated to wine and cheese onboard – with a nifty table opening up with built in holders to slip our wine glasses into (of course). Driving back through the old town in the city whilst chinking our glasses was a surreal experience but a good one – very “I’m on holiday in Geneva”.

For the Chocoholic: La BonBonniere Chocolate Workshop

I’m not leaving Switzerland without a chocolate class, right? Early Monday, before my flight, I nipped off to the La BonBonnière chocolate shop. I tempered, moulded and taste-tested – all in a day’s work. If you’ve ever wanted to play Willy Wonka (or just feast on the sweet stuff), this workshop is basically a golden ticket.

Geneva: Where to Eat

Fancy a Night In (Sort Of): Beau Rivage

After a busy day of wandering, there’s something deliciously indulgent about dining in style without leaving your bubble of luxury. Beau Rivage’s in-house restaurant is a masterclass in understated elegance – think perfectly cooked meats, seasonal veg, and a wine list that’ll have you dithering for a good ten minutes. I perched by the window, savouring every bite as the sun set behind the mountains. If romance could be bottled, this place would do it first.

For an Al Fresco Lunch: Lake Geneva

When the mood calls for lunch with a view, consider one of the many waterside restaurants dotted around the lake. Nothing beats tucking into fresh lake fish, summery salads and maybe another cheeky glass of Swiss wine as you watch yachts bob along the water. It felt quintessentially Geneva – a little bit indulgent, and yet totally casual at the same time.

For Traditional Swiss Vibes: Les Armures

On Saturday night, I dined at Les Armures – a restaurant that’s pretty much an institution. Whether you fancy fondue or raclette, it’s the ideal spot to indulge in traditional Swiss comfort food. The wooden-beamed interior only adds to the cosy vibe. We also recommend trying the chicory salad with blue cheese and the iconic Swiss dessert of meringue with Gruyere cream – which is nothing short of transcendent.

For Countryside Lunch: Café de Peney

Sunday saw me exploring beyond city limits (on the aforementioned TukTuk), and I landed at Café de Peney for lunch: a rustic eatery that champions seasonal, local ingredients. My grilled fish was unbelievably fresh, paired with a cheeky glass of Swiss wine (naturally). The real showstopper, though, is the setting: quiet countryside, with the hum of nature in the background. If you need a break from city hustle, this is where you’ll find it.

Geneva: Final Thoughts

My 48 hours (plus a smidge extra) in Geneva were the perfect mix of lakeside charm, countryside escapades and enough sweet treats to last a lifetime. Whether you’re strolling the cobbled old town or taking a boat ride at sunset, Geneva manages to be both serene and buzzing with energy.   If you’re looking for a scenic city break with more than enough good food and wine to keep you smiling, Geneva’s definitely your place.
