As autumn descends upon London, it’s time to swap out summer salads for something a bit more substantial. After all, nothing says “I’m ready for sweater weather” quite like a plate piled high with tender meat and a generous pour of gravy. If you’re looking for your next roast spot – you’re in luck. Here’s our current favourites:

1. For Seasonal Roasts: Duke of Greenwich

Nestled down a quiet cobbled street in the heart of Greenwich, this lovely pub offers the best of London pub gardens combined with elevated food and banging cocktails. In the summer they use their rooftop handmade smoker and outdoor kitchen to serve up incredible summer Sunday Roasts – think smoked beer-can jerk chicken, grilled swordfish, heritage tomato salads. The rest of the year their Sunday Roast menu offers all of the staples alongside something a bit different.

The thing that sets this place apart is the commitment to quality ingredients and providence. Fish is sourced from Wright Brothers in Cornwall, meats from Lyons Hill Farm in Dorset, and veg direct from farmers all over the south of England – this is what makes these dishes sing.

We loved the scallops with beef-fat breadcrumbs but the star of the show was the BBQ cauliflower wings with chipotle sauce which were sweet and juicy in a way we didn’t realise was possible for a brassica. We also accidentally ordered the vegan peanut butter cheesecake which was so good, we didn’t even realise it was dairy-free. Watch out for their Beer Fest every September too…

2. For an Unlimited Sunday Roast: KöD

KöD started out life as a Danish restaurant dedicated to its namesake: meat. With restaurants across Copenhagen, Oslo, Aarhus and Stavanger and London City, as well as a new opening in Soho – this place prioritises simple steak cooked perfectly, served with a tight selection of sides and a winning wine list.

The wait staff at this joint are obviously treated well and are happy, which makes the experience of eating here all the better – as the staff are all lovely, charming people and the service is impeccable. In fact, KöD apparently operates a waiting list for employment, so they must be doing something right.

We loved the truffle mac and cheese and meltingly tender and flavoursome chateaubriand. Also, don’t sleep on their deep-fried apple pie, served with vanilla ice cream and reminiscent of the Chicken Shop of old’s deep-filled tray of pie which used to be served at your table. But the most exciting thing about this place is the unlimited Sunday roast on offer for 39 quid. Eat all you can across a menu of roast meats, chicken wings, Caesar salad, chips and peppercorn sauce.  Look out for their new Soho opening too. Swoon.

3. For an Upmarket Roast: The Colony Grill Room

If you’re looking for somewhere a bit more upscale, Colony Grill Room in Mayfair is a standout option. Its Sunday Roast is a proper treat – tender beef, crisp Yorkshire puddings, and a gravy that elevates everything on the plate. It’s an upmarket version of a classic.

For something a little more indulgent, the rib-eye steak is perfectly executed and top quality. And dessert? Their cheesecake is just the right balance of richness without being too heavy, ideal to finish off a meal.

With its old-school elegance and attentive service, this is the kind of place to choose for a special occasion. Think: new job, parents’ anniversary, engagement dinner, and you’ll not be far off.
