Return of the Rubarb: 6 Dishes Celebrating this Season’s Star IngredientBy Alicia Grimshaw
This is not a drill, rhubarb season is here people! Yes, our favourite vegetable (don’t you dare call it a fruit) is back in season and we’re having it in EVERYTHING, baby. Drinks? Pastries? Savoury dishes? Bubble baths? We’re all over it for the next few months. Thankfully we’re not the only ones with a passion for the ‘barb, so here’s the best places to get your fix in London over the coming months.
1. Trullo
What: Trullo, the beloved North London institution banging out delish Italian dishes, showcases Head Chef Ed Grace’s gorgeous creation: a silky vanilla panna cotta paired with poached rhubarb. A true crowd-pleaser.
Where: 300-302 St Paul’s Rd, London N1 2LH
2. Don’t Tell Dad
What: Rhubarb takes centre stage at Don’t Tell Dad, the brand-new neighbourhood restaurant and bakery in Queen’s Park. During the day, opt for the Rhubarb and Greek yoghurt Danish, created by Head Baker Keren Sternberg. Come evening, kick things off with a Rhubarb and almond sour, made using rhubarb poaching liquor, Adriatico amaretto, gin and lemon, before finishing with a Rhubarb frangipane tart with crème fraîche. You’ll be tickled pink.
Where: 10-14 Lonsdale Rd, London NW6 6RD
3. Café Deco
What: At Anna Tobias’ Bloomsbury restaurant, the rhubarb and apple pie is a standout favourite on the menu. And for good reason. Encased in golden pastry, this tangy dessert is served with chilled custard, making it a perfect hearty winter pud.
Where: 43 Store St, London WC1E 7DB
4. ToklasÂ
What: Nestled in the Strand, Toklas restaurant was opened by Matthew Slotover and Amanda Sharp, the founders of Frieze magazine and art fairs. This cold February, Toklas has a taste of spring to offer with its Rhubarb ripple ice cream. The restaurant’s Mediterranean-inspired dishes made with fresh, seasonal produce are the perfect prelude to indulge in the Rhubarb ripple ice cream made with Kentish forced pink rhubarb sourced through Shrub for the dessert course. Feel better about this month’s grey skies by treating yourself to a vibrant burst of colour from rhubarb puree swirled through ice cream for a blissful bite of spring at Toklas restaurant.
Where: 1 Surrey Street, London, WC2R 2ND
5. Fonda
What: At Fonda, the Rhubarb and Gooseberry Paloma is a vibrant twist on a classic. Made with Ocho Blanco Tequila, it combines the tangy brightness of gooseberry and verjus with the subtle sweetness of rhubarb tonic. This refreshing cocktail balances bold flavours with a light, crisp finish, capturing the essence of British produce with a Mexican flair.

6. Carousel
What: Carousel Wine Bar’s most recent seasonal dessert is a true masterclass in texture and flavour. Tart and tangy Rhubarb sorbet meets a smooth and zesty yoghurt and lemon mousse, all elevated by a sprinkling of brown butter crumble. A touch of caramel brings it all together, creating a dessert that’s as indulgent as it is refreshing. Two spoons please.
