The time to hibernate indoors has arrived. Along with crisp dark mornings and the inevitable endless search for the perfect winter coat, means too, that it’s time to light the first candle of the season. Get ready to fall into a winter-zen like state, all at the strike of a match.
From seductive heady florals to rich and spicy earthy offerings – our line up provides the ultimate escape from frosty autumnal days, morning or night.
Ben Gorham (founder of Byredo) is a man after my own heart. If you think fragrances are one-note-wonders then take a stroll past the Byredo counter in Liberty. His fragrances are complex, unique and deeply delicious. Fleur Fantome is a rich floral scent (violet leaves, tulip, galbanum and helitrope) with a distinct warm hit suede. Utterly addictive.
Jo Malone’s Green Tomato Leaf is the definition of a power candle, capturing the true essence of the named scent. A perfect blend of galbanum, cassis, artemesia and moss to create one of my all time favourite Jo Malone home fragrance scents. Distinct and uplifting.
Bella Freud’s candles are quite frankly art in their own right. Je T’aime Jane is a powdery floral scent with an undeniable freshness. A precious fragrance of Snow Lily, the scent of the Tiger Lily in bloom. Delicate and warming. A true luxe candle.
NARS do candles, and unsurprisingly they’re game changing. Our pick is Oran – packed with tuberose, white gardenia, violet and jasmine with subtle hints of citrus notes coming from bergamot. The matte white glass evokes a frosty winter glow which is incredibly inviting.
Billowy flames, a dark glass and hot molten wax. True Grace’s Manor [in Fig] is the perfect balance of warmth and woodiness which lies over a soft sweetness from both cassis and mandarin. London is an amazing city, but we have a real lack of fig trees. True Grace to the rescue.
Diptyque candles. A statement of luxury, a coffee table essential, on the side of Karlie Kloss’ marble bath tub and something I too, am obsessed with. My soft spot in the collection lies with Baies. A delicious combination of rose bouquets and blackcurrent leaves.
Rodial + Mary Katrantzou = a candle? Designed by none other than the Queen of digital print herself, this pick is the ultimate luxe candle for the friend who has everything. A beautiful statement offering which has an delicate, bright orange blossom scent. Ideal for crisp sunny autumnal mornings.
The White Company’s latest candle innovation involves a collection of three perfectly “off duty” fragranced candles dedicated to the best two days of the week: The Weekend. Our pick is Weekend, the kind of candle you want to burn whilst wrapped in blankets on an old leather armchair. Warming nutmeg and bergamot bear the top notes whilst cedarwood and amber add a ever so slight hint of woodiness. Cosy.
Bamford’s Incense, Rock Rose and Amber
Bamford’s Incense, Rock Rose and Amber. Cased in an elegant frosted bottle-green glass burns an inviting combination of amber and incense, overlain with a fresh note of coriander and deeper notes of leather. A cinnamon free winter candle – one in a million.
Everyone knows the aura of a countryside pub roaring fire over the winter months. And in true British form, heritage brand Noble Isle have captured both scent and visual to create Fireside. The recipe? Cypress oil, pepper, and ginger with a subtle warmth of vanilla.
