Cornwall in January? An unexpected proposition, perhaps. Yet, The Scarlet Hotel, poised dramatically above Mawgan Porth’s rugged coastline, transforms this classically depressing time of year into a totally exquisite experience. This adults-only eco-retreat offers a sanctuary of cosy tranquility against the backdrop of the very wild Atlantic. We arrived as we moved into 2025 seeking a moment of restorative calm, and discovered a place where understated elegance is in total rhythm with the raw beauty of the Cornish landscape. It’s a destination for those who want a place to disconnect from the everyday and reconnect with themselves in luxurious surroundings.

The Scarlet, Cornwall: The Rooms

These are not merely rooms; they are private sanctuaries designed to maximise the breathtaking panorama. Cornwall views are really something else. Floor-to-ceiling windows showcase the ever-changing canvas of the winter sea, every day I tried to pinpoint the colour and failed, while the minimalist Scandi-style decor creates an atmosphere of serenity. Stepping onto the private terrace, the crisp, completely quiet January air feels almost below zero; a mini cold plunge I pretended to myself. As much tea and coffee is available on demand, we enjoyed many a cosy drink while soaking up the views and reading our books.

The Scarlet, Cornwall: The Spa

The Scarlet Spa is a sanctuary of holistic wellbeing, a place where Ayurvedic principles meet the restorative power of the sea. The tailored treatments, designed to soothe and rejuvenate, are a journey into deep relaxation. The cliff-top hot tubs, which we nestled in with a beverage, steaming against the cool January air, offer a great vantage point to witness the dramatic waves and even rain, which felt very fun as we ran from the sauna to the pool.

The Scarlet vs Bedruthan: Which is for you?

It is worth highlighting at this point that Scarlet is adults only and ideal for that peaceful escape and indulgent retreat. However, for families seeking a stylish coastal getaway, Bedruthan, a few minutes walk away, is their sister hotel and offers an exceptional alternative, with its child-friendly (and indeed dog) amenities, and relaxed dining options.

The Scarlet, Cornwall: The Restaurants

Dining at The Scarlet is a celebration of Cornwall’s seasonal produce, a culinary experience that really showed the hotel are seriously committed to sustainability. The menu showcases the finest local produce, from freshly caught seafood to hearty winter vegetables, accompanied by a curated selection of biodynamic wines. Breakfast, a leisurely affair, features artisan delights and the most tasty gluten-free bread from the bakery.

Bedruthan are home to fine dining restaurant Ogo. I am gluten and dairy free, and usually rule out restaurants like that as a possibility, but I cannot explain how much care they took. Highlights included St Piran’s pork, with elderflower mustard and mushrooms, smoked potato and a marmite cracker.

The Scarlet, Cornwall: Verdict

The Scarlet Hotel in January is an absolute revelation, it set me up for the year in ways I can’t quite articulate. A recalibration, a real permission slip, it felt to stop, breathe, and realign. There’s no pomp, no showiness – just a deep understanding of what true restoration feels like.
